Temporary Theatre for Silent City

Silent City is a musical theatre project in Matera 2019 co-produced by Compagnia Teatrale l'Albero and Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019, in collaboration with Open Design School, based on the cornerstones of the confrontation between two generations, a creative and collective process, a new idea of opera. The show, the first case in Italy of an opera created by the inhabitants of a city, was staged from 28 November to 1 December in the Teatro Temporaneo di Tre Torri, a space created from a former disco in one of the suburbs of the city of Basilicata, San Giacomo, designed and built by Open Design School with the set designer Bruno Soriato, in a place used in the past as a children's playroom and disco. The themes of accessibility and theatrical spaces were at the heart of the design of the Temporary Theatre: Open Design School has redesigned the space, cancelling the concept of classical scenography, which disappears to give rise to a new theatrical dimension that cancels the distance between the action and the viewer. In doing so, the focus was on the theme of accessibility, creating a device that is open and accessible to all. The distribution of the public has been conceived in such a way as to integrate the different modes of enjoyment of the show. We also intervened on the level of legibility through a system of way-finding that allows the public to identify performance spaces, entrances, places of rest. Mariano Silletti ph.
