27 March: Architecture and ancient cities - how to make them accessible

Campus UniBas Matera, room C003.

OpenTalk27

Dr. Jos Boys, Senior Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, and Co-Director of The DisOrdinary Architecture Project, will talk about ‘Doing Disability Differently’:  from being a problem to a creative force. Disabled people still tend to be seen as a problem in the design of the built environment; a restriction and an afterthought. But what happens if we realize that our ideas about disability and ability are completely interlinked? By thinking about disability differently, this talk suggests ways in which to build creatively, harnessing the diverse knowledge disabled people have regarding space.

The open talk, moderated by Rita Orlando, project manager of the Open Design School, will include the participation of Maria Rosaria Mongelli, Councilor for Urban Planning of the Municipality of Matera, who will address the theme of planning and recovery for the sustainable use of urban cultural centers and Antonello Pagliuca, Professor of Architectural Technology at DiCEM - UniBas, who will present inclusive designs to promote accessibility of existing heritage.

The event will be opened by Aurelia Sole, Dean of the University of Basilicata, Antonella Guida, Coordinator of the Architecture Course of DiCEM - UniBas and Rossella Tarantino, Development and Relations Area Manager at Matera Basilicata Foundation 2019.

28 March: Performing arts and disabilities in the United Kingdom and Italy

Campus UniBas Matera, Aula Magna.

OpenTalk28

A comparison/debate between the artist Noemi Lakmaier, an Austrian based in London who is particularly interested in how we relate to ourselves and to others, and Monica Barone, an Italian visual and performative artist. What does it mean to be an artist with a disability today in Italy and the United Kingdom? How much could the cultural context and the institutional system influence artistic practice? How often are artistic projects confused with social projects when there are artists with disabilities involved?

Alongside the artists' voices, Anna Consolati and Elena Sorbi will present some Italian good practices with actions and programs carried out by Oriente Occidente Festival of Rovereto (TN) and Lenz Foundation of Parma.

The open talk, moderated by Vania Cauzillo, co-founder of Compagnia Teatrale L’Albero, will count with the participation of Alison Driver, Arts Manager of British Council in Italy, Maria Rosaria Mongelli, Councilor for Social Policies and Schools of the Municipality of Matera, and Mariavaleria Mininni Senior Lecturer of urban planning and landscape and responsible for the Diverse Ability at DICEM - UniBas, which will illustrate the challenge of the universities for the enhancement of young people in terms of social responsibility.
