The third major exhibition of the program of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 is "The Poetics of Primary Numbers. From Pythagoras to Algorithms", with the scientific direction of the mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi, co-produced by Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019 and Polo Museale della Basilicata, and set up at the Archaeological Museum of Metapontum and Palazzo Acito. The exhibition aims to see mathematics from the inside, through the beauty of numbers and their specific contents, and from the outside through the numbers of beauty and its relationship with the rest of culture. The faces of mathematics are multiform and it transcends all national and cultural boundaries. The project is developed in five exhibitions between Metaponto and Matera, with two paths, historical-didactic and artistic, an interactive laboratory, which are accompanied by a series of initiatives that will take place partly in June, on the occasion of the summer solstice, and partly in September, for the autumn equinox. The exhibition layouts have been conceived, designed and created by the Open Design School in collaboration with the Polo Museale and the team working on the executive project for the new Metaponto museum. In particular, the first exhibition, dedicated to the figure of Pythagoras, contains six special pieces, corresponding to six mathematical functions, created with an analogical approach, to encourage manual interaction of the visitor.
